The problem of plastics is indeed a grave one. Not only does plastic pollution and waste cause a great challenge for our planet, but its production and extraction from natural resources have proven to be harmful both to humans and our environment.
To address the gravity of this topic and more, Tzu Chi USA CEO Debra Boudreaux served as a panelist at a parallel session to the 2023 Parliament of the World’s Religions called “The Problem with Plastics.” Her fellow panelist, Frankie Orona, the Executive Director of the Society of Native Nations, shared the blunt – but wise – perspective of one his elders:
“You have to ask yourself, what did you think was going to happen when you started sucking death out of the ground, right?”
At the same time, Frankie says the same elder believes ‘love’ is a simple, yet powerful solution:
“If you love the air like you love your children and your loved ones, you’re going to want to make sure… that the air not just survives, but thrives.”
