For the third year in a row, Tzu Chi USA has had the great privilege of hosting fellow Buddhist practitioners, interfaith leaders, community partners, and the general public to celebrate its annual Buddha Day Ceremony in English.

On May 11, 2024, more than 300 attendees joined the service, which honored more than Buddha Day alone; it also included Mother’s Day and Global Tzu Chi Day (which honors the achievements of Tzu Chi worldwide since its founding in 1966).

Representing the Catholic community and offering a prayer onstage was Father Alexei Smith of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He explained that “I love coming to things like this. It’s my position at the Archdiocese, but I love coming just to feel the karma to witness the coming together of humanity.” “It’s wonderful,” he added.

At the ceremony, people got to participate in the Buddha Day Ceremony, where they could symbolically cleanse their hearts and purify their spirits. On the importance of sharing a sacred ritual in Buddhism like this with people of different faiths, Chao Chu of the Los Angeles Buddhist Union said that “we live in a diverse society, so, we are trying to promote how to respect and understand what we call mutual respect and understanding.”
