Focusing on the “whole child” is how teachers cultivate their students at Tzu Chi’s summer camp in Los Angeles, California. For two weeks during the summer, students from Taiwan are exposed to the English language, various culture traits, character building, creative arts, environmental education and a slew of other Tzu Chi-modeled values. The hope is to guide the campers in applying these traits to their daily lives so that their decision-making will contribute to positivity around the world. In the words of Master Cheng Yen, “It is through the daily cultivation of patient endurance that we develop proper demeanor and conduct.” Hopefully, these students take away inspiration and lifelong memories from their summer experience.
