Empowering Women and Girls
Series: Tzu Chi Joins CSW69On March 19, Tzu Chi participated in the “Empower and Elevate: Transforming Women’s Lives through Vocational Education” event at the Church Center of the United Nations (CCUN). Meaningful discussions were shared on the empowerment of women and girls, as well as innovative approaches and success stories from organizations working to transform social norms and cultures that hinder the flourishing of women and girls.
Sio Kee Hong and Cecelia Ong from Tzu Chi shared inspiring stories of vocational training in India and Nepal. Changing traditional mindsets is tough; as Sio Kee Hong mentioned, ”Only 20% of Indian females have the opportunity to work.” Through the counseling and education provided by the sewing, knitting, and handicraft classes, women have found empowerment to contribute to their communities and take charge of their lives.
“Women can help women as well once they’ve been empowered,” emphasized Cecilia Ong. Overall, the event expressed the need for compassionate, inclusive strategies to transform lives and create actionable steps for gender equality. Education and vocational training play a key role in helping women achieve independence, and reducing economic vulnerability, while also building an environment where women and girls can truly thrive!
