Disaster Relief

On August 27, 2023, the Tzu Chi USA Pacific Islands Regional Office hosted its first emergency cash card distribution to help households who’d lost their homes after devastating wildfires on Maui. The effort involved volunteers from across the United States, and especially from across the Hawaiian Islands. To describe the feeling, Tzu Chi Hawaii volunteer Shiulina Wu shared:

“I come to Maui often, but today was very different because once we touched down, it’s a heavier feeling because you know the island is hurting.”

And hurting, it is. After receiving an emergency cash card from Tzu Chi volunteers, Matthew Isenberg shed light on his experience:

“When I was walking up to my house, I felt like I was looking at myself from outside of my body… that’s how I felt, just numb. It was unreal, literally. In one night—no job, no home. Your friends are displaced. It’s just horrific.”

Keep watching and help us bring this meaningful support to those who are struggling on Maui with a contribution to our fundraiser, donate.tzuchi.us/mauirelief.

*Donations are now being matched up to $1 MIL.
