Just two weeks after Hurricane Ian inundated southwest Florida, Tzu Chi USA hosted its first disaster relief distributions in Arcadia and Fort Myers, FL to support severely impacted families on October 15, 2022.
Of the effort to bring speedy help, Tzu Chi Southern Region Executive Director Sean Lo said, “we hope we can offer some help to locals so they can have peace of mind.” Not only was the distribution planned and executed quickly, an online form was set up so care recipients could pre-register efficiently, and go home with an emergency cash card as soon as possible. And, it mattered – a lot.
Breaking down, Tom Walensky of Fort Myers told us, “I’ve lost everything. And you’re just wonderful. Thank you.” Another care recipient, Michael, told us about his friend who he’d brought to the distribution. Though she didn’t speak to our team, he told us, “she lost everything. She got out with the clothes on her back and her purse, and she’s sitting in my car, her eyes have all welled up because she can’t believe your kindness.”
