The Only Thing Standing
Series: Healing LA From The WildfiresStarting on January 7, 2025, Los Angeles County experienced a series of wildfires which ravaged entire communities and devastated the homes and businesses of thousands of people. Known collectively as the L.A. Wildfires, residents faced unimaginable losses and hardships, as well as a sense of disbelief. “I needed to see with my own eyes that… that my house was gone.” said Yolanda de la Torre after losing her home like so many wildfire survivors.
Tzu Chi USA immediately commenced an array of relief distributions for impacted families at our San Gabriel Valley and West Los Angeles Service Centers, serving Los Angeles communities through timely action, compassion, and generosity. “We try, here, to help them as much as we can. To comfort them. To give them emotional support, give them financial support,” expressed Flora Yeh, one of Tzu Chi’s many volunteers echoing our sense of love through critical support to help recovering residents regain their hope, dignity, and courage. Even in losing her own home, Flora’s dedication remained to provide assistance.
While the road to recovery is a marathon, Tzu Chi’s relief efforts have been able to reach many L.A. residents who all share their own lives and stories. “All of these volunteers. I just can’t be thankful enough,” shared care recipient Bala Chandran. To date, Tzu Chi has assisted 4.3k families and 18.4k individuals impacted by the wildfires, providing $4.7 million in cash card relief and delivering 4.2k DA.AI eco-blankets. Over 1.3k volunteer shifts have been completed, ensuring that those in need receive the care and support they deserve.
Even if the only thing standing is hope, through kindness, generosity, and a collective outpouring of love worldwide, Los Angeles can find recovery and heal.
