Tzu Chi Prepares for Emergency Aid on Maui
Series: Help Heal MauiOn Saturday, August 26, Tzu Chi volunteers split into several groups: one, to help pack food and supplies at Lahaina’s largest distribution center, and a second team to setup the venue where Tzu Chi’s first emergency cash card distribution will take place.
Both efforts are intended to help those who’ve lost their homes to the recent wildfires on Maui, Hawaii, where 115 are confirmed dead. Locals like Linda have explained that it’s an all-hands-on-deck situation:
“Everybody’s coming up and doing what they can to help. It’s to me, it’s like the beacon of hope. It’s like the light in the darkness of all this.”
Renee Chao, a staff member at Tzu Chi USA, also explains why it’s important for Tzu Chi to work with locals and be ‘in the trenches:’
“Joining the community is the good starting [point] to do long-term recovery, because that’s real. When we say we are here, we are really here.”
At the same time, the threat of fire isn’t over. Watch the video for more and help us do what we can to bring healing to the people of Maui with a donation* at donate.tzuchi.us/mauirelief.
