Disaster Relief

In late October 2023, Hurricane Otis made landfall on Mexico’s southwestern coast as a Category 5 storm, destroying countless dwellings in a matter of moments.

Hoping to offer its expertise in disaster relief, Tzu Chi volunteers from the United States and across Mexico are working together with local leaders in the city of Acapulco to benefit its most vulnerable community members.

As Adolfo Silva Pita, the Priest of Fátima Parish, puts it, “It has really been a learning experience. We’re together in trying to join forces, first of all to make a census, as detailed as possible, of the families and their losses in order to find… those who are really in serious need.”

Ultimately though, he recognizes the commonality that both organizations have in their values and goals: “love, well-being, and peace for all human beings. Fighting against adversity seeking good for all human beings with love.”
